After coaching volleyball for 13 years and traveling in the United States for a couple summers I felt the Lord asking me to do something for Him. I told Him I would love to but all I could do was teach. One day as I was leaving the Christian Bookstore I glanced back and saw an advertisement to teach English in Japan for six weeks. So in June 1994, I packed my bags and the adventure of teaching English in Japan started. For the next 23 summers I traveled to Japan and taught English during my summer vacation. In 2018, I joined Harvest Alliance and with the backing of my Church, Hastings Evangelical Free Church located in Hastings, Nebraska moved to Japan as a full time missionary.
I work with Tim and Wakako Clark in a Church they have planted. Among other things, I teach English classes and English Bible classes. I also organize and teach American cooking classes and craft classes which attract non church going community members. The hope is to draw people from these community classes into the church as they come to understand more about who Jesus is and what the church is all about. Forming relationships with these community members is an integral part of the Community outreach. The Christian community in Japan comprises less than 1% of the population.
In the summer of 2019, I hosted a short term mission team from my home Church. The team conducted 2 Vacation Bible Schools: one for the children of Japanese pastors and the other centered on sharing the gospel with children of non-Christian families.
My desire is to continue to serve Christ and introduce the Japanese community to Christ through community classes and developing relationships with those whom I come in contact.
