Since its inception in 2005, Children of the Amazon, among many other projects, has supported children at risk in the Amazon River basin in Iquitos, Peru, through our educational/medical and dental programs. We currently provide all support for school and nutrition programs for more than 20 children. Over the years we have also been successful in placing many in foster/adoptive homes. These are children who would otherwise be trying to maintain themselves on the streets and exposed to all types of exploitation and abuse.
Although school is free in Peru, each student must provide uniforms and school supplies which cost about $150 for the year. This amount is absolutely prohibitive for the families of children we support; many from single parent homes and some homeless. The average earnings for full time laborers are about $55 per week. Most of these single parent homes earn less than that!
COTA has been providing all educational expenses, including meal programs at school and tutoring as needed. Several students are attaining straight A grades and three graduated from High School this year. The medical and dental care we provide is critical for these children who are not be able to afford any treatment. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our Donors and the active participation of Calvary Chapel Missionary Albert Smith.
Education is the pathway to obtaining better paying jobs and removing oneself from the hardships of poverty. . . changing the dynamics for generations to follow.
