John and Janie Chitester were involved in Military ministries with Berean Mission Inc. and the Navigators for 20 years emphasizing discipleship. In 2005, God opened up an opportunity to be involved with Ripe for Harvest (now Harvest Alliance International) and each enthusiastically entered into a new phase of their Discipleship ministry. Through Harvest Alliance, they have been able to disciple pastors and teach Discipleship principles overseas; primarily in East Africa, with extensive work in Tanzania, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo .
In 2009, God called them to live in Kigali, Rwanda for 8 month; meeting weekly with pastors, church leaders and individuals teaching the basic principles of discipleship and how to implement a discipleship process in their churches and in the lives of individuals.
It has been an exciting and humbling time of ministry for John and Janie as they help others learn what it means to be a disciple of Christ and how to encourage and reproduce this in the lives of other believers. Their Discipleship ministry has expanded over the past 15 years as more people asked to be included in their mission in Africa.
They have found the African people to be so gracious and giving; while having so little, they desire to give so much. Each “disciple” is eager to learn and comes faithfully to gather up whatever the Chitester’s have to offer. Through their interaction with John and Janie they deepen their intimacy with Christ. As Janie said of this ministry, “It has been a true experience of grace in our lives.”
Although they have a home in South Carolina, they make frequent and often extended trips to Africa; building on previous relationships and establishing new ones.
